Ake's Journal: Strange recent occurrences.

Last night I dreamed I was writing a bitter haiku in the snow...and when I woke up, I was somewhere else.

And the air...smelled different. I wondered at first if I died. I still do. But slowly I made out that I was sitting in some sort of hall, in the dark of night, and there was someone else there.

He was a strange little man-creature, with many animal faces running down his torso, like a totem pole. (In fact, I think that's what he said his name is. I'll have to ask him later.) And he said we were the only ones here, but that others were coming, for this was the place where lost things that want to be found go. Things like him, and like me.

And he told me we were on a mountain.

I pressed my hands to the floor and yes! I could feel it! Not an abandoned, unvisited construct like the one in Topwarp, and not the lonesome dream I lived in, but a real mountain! Nurtured and alive and full of magic!

He took me outside, up the slope to a beautiful spring on the mountain's peak, and I let my kami-aspect fling itself into the earth. Ah! I could breathe again! And the water there cleaned the sour dirt from my face and feet and I think from my very soul.

We talked for a while, and a few more bitter words were spat from my beak, but the more of them came out, the more my complaints seemed distant and ancient and unimportant.

I wandered off to sleep after a while, and while he said that I could stay in one of the houses, as none were occupied yet, I chose to roost in a tree instead. And it wasn't a metal tree or a plastic tree or a rubber bush with aphrodisiac blossoms. It was a real tree full of bugs and old nature magic, with its roots in the dirt. A tree like a tengu should sleep in.

And now that I feel like I am home for the first time in many months, I realize that much as that place suffocated me, there are still things I will miss. The funny little squirrel who was often my only source of comfort, The odd green lizard-curator who always treated me with kindness, the silly fox boy - another alienated Earthling who, like me, couldn't wrap his minds around the local customs. There was that odd shifting spider creature who at least seemed to notice I was alive, and the poor tormented black hole who tried to save my life, and that old creep Buck, and the deranged little costume man who always looked different. And the plumed serpent who showed up one night, a god-creature like me, and a funny one at that. I think I will even miss that damn violent butterfly, for although I didn't act on it I could relate to her frustration and torment.

And now, little journal, the sun is rising higher in the sky, and I must go see if anyone else has arrived.

I wonder if I will find her here, and if she will be real this time...
